A Purpose for All Things

2020-08-19 Blog

I love it when people ask questions.  I especially enjoy questions from children.  Why?  Because their queries are often more honest and profound than their adult counterparts.  For example, I was asked the other day by a five-year-old about why God would create and allow somethings like wasps to exist?  From his perspective he could see no purpose for their being and they only cause pain and fear in the lives of people.  What a great question.  He admitted his confusion and fear in the nature of the question, and He wanted to know why God would create wasps.  At first I wanted to respond and say that they were a part of the broken world that was ruined when sin entered the picture.  I was going to put them in the same “evil” category as ticks and mosquitos.  But then I decided I should do a little research.  Without going into too much detail, the BBC developed an article on wasps (apparently the UK has over 9000 species of wasps. Who knew??) which says:

Wasps are also just important in the environment. Social wasps are predators and as such they play a vital ecological role, controlling the numbers of potential pests like greenfly and many caterpillars…  A world without wasps would be a world with a very much larger number of insect pests on our crops and gardens.  As well as being voracious and ecologically important predators, wasps are increasingly recognized as valuable pollinators, transferring pollen as they visit flowers to drink nectar. (BBC News Aug.25, 2017)

There you go.  Wasps have a purpose in God’s awesome creation, and even though they can hurt us, we should try and appreciate their contribution to nature.  So I went back to the kiddo and told him what I had learned.  Unfortunately, he was not impressed and said, “Wasps are bad, I hate them, and God made a mistake!!”  I told you kids were more profound and honest in their questions and assertions about things that bother them in life

So what’s the point?  Questions show that your brain is working and that you are living life full of curiosity and you have a thirst for knowledge.  Both are qualities that are very important in living a joy-filled life of wonder when you consider the vastness and complexity of God’s creation.  Yes the world is broken and imperfect, but it will one day be restored to its created perfection.

It reminds me of Isaiah’s prophecy when he said,

“The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the LORD” (Isaiah 65:25).

And things like bees, wasps, mosquitos, ticks, and gorillas (don’t ask) will no longer hurt us.  But in the meantime, take solace that God has a plan for everything and everyone, even wasps.

Thanks for reading and tune into my show ”Getting Answers” on Thursdays at noon on Facebook and YouTube.  I try to answer questions you and your friends might have about God, the Bible, Jesus, or really anything at all.  It is an expression of Chapel’s desire to “Equip you to know Jesus and follow Him.”  So let us know how we can help.  Be safe and continue to love and care for each other during this time.

God Bless,

Derek
