How's Your Spiritual Eyesight?

2020.08.04 Blog Website

So, I forgot to take my glasses to work the other day.  This is an incredibly rare mistake, but I blame it on the grandkids distracting me while trying to get ready.  It is so nice to have innocent little people around to blame things on.  Don’t worry.  They are young and flexible and will get over it

Anyway, I was amazed at how bad my vision had gotten without glasses.  It’s not that I can’t see anything, but everything is a little fuzzy, blurry, and difficult to make out letters and details.  How did this happen, and why does it seem like with every pair of glasses my prescription gets stronger and my vision gets worse?  Is this some kind of plot or conspiracy from the eyeglass industry to keep me addicted to their product and take all of my money?  I wish.  The truth is my body is just broken.  Not in the dramatic sense that I am going to go blind tomorrow, but in the slow “decaying” sense.  It is a simple byproduct of sin and the consequences of living a rebellious life towards God.

Sin doesn’t only affect my spiritual life, it also breaks my body and ruins all of creation.  And if you know the book of Genesis, it also separates us from God, makes childbirth more painful, frustrates our ability to work, and eventually leads all of us to a physical death.  It is a bad thing and we need to take it seriously.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  And Romans 6:23 follows closely behind by saying, “the wages of sin is death” (basically we earn or deserve to be separated from God because of it).  So why am I thinking about all of this related to my glasses?  Well for one thing my brain is a little weird in all the connections it makes.  But the other thing is my eyeglasses (conspiracy or not) actually change my disability and allow me to see.

Through them I can read, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, be inspired by the night sky, and be totally humbled by the beautiful smile of my 6-month-old granddaughter.  And, the glasses are my constant reminder that I need help to live life.  Just like we need Jesus to give us forgiveness and take our sin problem upon Himself through the cross.  We can’t live the Christian life without the power of God’s indwelling Holy Spirit running through our veins.

Isn’t it incredible that God graciously gives us the gift of spiritual sight through Jesus?  Without Him, there is no hope, no forgiveness, no eternal life, and no abundant life here on earth.

So, what in your life reminds you of your sinfulness and need for a savior?  We need these reminders to stay focused, humble, and dependent upon Him.  Otherwise, life is just blurry, confusing, and unlivable trying to do things on our own.

May Jesus give you clear insight into how much He loves you and how beautiful it is to live in the glory of His creation.  Yeah, I know the world is broken, but just wait.  It will be perfect and fully magnificent again when Jesus returns, and no eyeglasses will be required to see it

Stay safe and God Bless.
