Which Hat Are You Wearing?

2020.09.03 Blog

Hey, I’m Kylie. Lover of people, non-fiction books, and Coca-Cola. I’m also a believer, wife, mama (to three babies, one in our hearts and two in our arms), daughter, sister, friend, and more. You see, I wear many hats, like most of you do, too. But sometimes it feels like these hats I wear have to be traded back and forth in order to fit into the scenario I find myself.

When I’m working as an aide to a state senator, my outside-the-home job, I need to put on my employee and political scientist hat, but when I’m home with our kiddos, I need to take that other hat off and put on the hat of mama. The reality, though, is that I actually just wear more than one hat at once. And I think that’s what Paul, in 1 Corinthians 9:12-23, means when he says he becomes all things to all people. Instead of taking each hat off as if one would burden or interfere with another, I’ve come to learn that by wearing them together, I am more of who the Lord created me to be and who I am for the time in which He has placed me.

When it comes to Women’s Ministry, this conviction remains the same. Instead of treating women as the hats that they wear, I want them to know and love the Lord who created them to be these things. Each of those attributes has been given to them by a God who has loved them and created them so that they might reach the world for Him. But we can only do this if we know and love the Scripture given to us and for us by God.

As we kick off this year’s Women’s Ministry with Bible studies, you’ll see that we are shifting to a focus on Scripture itself and an understanding of theology that grows us more deeply to be like Christ. We’ve created a mission statement for our ministry as a guiding post to ensure that we are doing these things well.

Equipping women to know the Lord through a greater understanding of Scripture and by pursuing community with one another.

Ultimately, I want women to know doctrine and theology, not as a source of pride or arrogance, but to point us closer to our Creator as we wear the many hats He has placed before us. If I could summarize my heart for Women’s Ministry it would be this, “Own your theology.” I hope that this year we can do this together!
